Kilimbi

The Kilimbi Washing Station is located on the shores of Lake Kivu in the Western Province of Rwanda. The natural conditions are exceptional for the production of unwashed coffees. This washing station was one of the first to be approved for this type of process in Rwanda. The strict process ensures incredible clarity and fruity flavors in your cup of coffee.

 

Shyira

The Shyira washing station in Rwanda's Nyabihu District is the small baby of Muraho Trading's 6 stations. It is also their highest station, collecting cherries from altitudes of 2000 to 2300 m above sea level.

 

The weather conditions, soil quality, and altitude make this Coffee Washing Station an ideal place for processing and producing high-quality coffee. On the drive up to the washing station, the volcanic chain between Rwanda's beautiful mountains, home to mountain gorillas, to the waterfalls of the wonderful Gicice River. As if that wasn't enough, Shyira, combined with the valley full of white sand, mist covering the hills, and good weather, truly makes it unique and singular.

 

Vunga

Muraho Coffee partnered with the cooperative in Vunga in 2017 and supports them in producing and marketing the best qualities of washed and natural coffees.

In May 2020, the Nyabihu district in northern Rwanda was hit by devastating rains, floods, and severe mudslides. Nyabihu is home to the families who produce the popular Shyira and Vunga coffees. Communities in Shyira and Vunga lost loved ones and their livelihoods.

Physical losses include at least 325 households (including 38 households of families supplying coffee to Vunga or Shyira), livestock, coffee trees, and other crops. Vital community and supply infrastructure were also destroyed, including 36 classrooms, 12 churches, a health center, the Vunga market, as well as electricity and water supply.

The destroyed crops and livestock were truly vital, and unfortunately, The Coffee Board could not directly support at that time. Nevertheless, we have not forgotten the producers and are now all the more pleased to include Vunga in our range alongside Shyira and to be able to support these unique families through our purchasing.

In May 2022, The Coffee Board visited the local producers to get an impression and strengthen the partnership, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. We are more than happy that the communities have been supported and continue to produce excellent coffee for us.
